Hands On With The Leica SL Mirror-less Camera

Leica, a renowned German optics company joined the mirror-less ILC market with its T (Typ 701). The device however failed to rouse the user interest and was not much acknowledged because of its minimalist design and very few physical buttons. The company has recently disclosed its full frame mirror-less SL system comprising of the Typ 601 ILC and three well-matched lenses- Apo-VarioElmarit-SL 90-280mm F2.8-4, Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm F2.8-4 ASPH and Summilux-SL 50mm F1.4 ASPH.

Leica’s SL is the first autofocus full-frame mirror-less camera with finest EVF seen till date and its basic control system makes it a treat to use.

LENS AND DESIGN

The new SL may seem to channel the design of the medium format S SLR and 35mm R SLR line-up but in fact it is an absolutely innovative design with a state of the art blueprint. The body comes in the classic black finish with aluminum and anodized cut. To make the grip strong yet comfortable, Leica SL Typ 601 ILC uses a textured material. The device is resistant to dust, moisture and splash. The use of gasket makes it convenient to shoot in harsh weather.

The SL weighs 1.9 pounds and features a 4.1×5.8×1.5 inches HWD, which can be made even larger with the use of vertical shooting grip.

UNMATCHED SPEED

Leica SL Typ 601 ILC encapsulates 2GB buffer memory allowing you to capture 24 MP pictures at the rate of 11 frames per second. For 4K and full HD videos, it is 24/30 and 120 frames per second respectively. In addition you can instantly save your shots in JPEG and RAW DNG formats to one or both of the available memory card slots. The perfect blend of high-speed performance, premium quality resolution and the brisk auto focus give you the unmatched professional photography experience. The camera does not support optical low-pass filter which means you can click exceptionally sharp images.

DISPLAY AND VIEW FINDER

The Leica SL camera features the largest electronic finder with 100% view, 0.8x magnification and 4.4 million pixels for incredible clarity. The device also supports in-built +2/-4 diopter compensation.

BATTERY

The Leica SL Typ 601 ILC supports a huge battery of 7.2 V with 14 Wh capacities. The device packs the similar capacity as a typical DSLR but since it needs to power many displays it is graded at a reduced life of 400 shots. But practically it lasts longer than the graded rating. The relative charging time is around 190 minutes.

PRICING

This brand new Leica SL will cost you $7450 for the body only. It is definitely pricey and costs more than twice the Sony A7s. The company however aims to meet the expectations with Leica SL Typ 601 ILC’s high-speed and high-end features and functions.

CABLE CONNECTIVITY

The Leica SL features all the usual cable connections including Micro USB 3.0 port Type B, Flash Sync Socket, Type A HDMI 1, 4 and Multi connector socket for audio adapter along with 3.5mm jacks.
