Samsung Launches High Capacity SSD

The South Korean electronics giant Samsung has recently launched its latest range of high-capacity Solid State Drives (SSD) worldwide. Codenamed PM1633a, this latest 15.36TB storage drive is being claimed as the world’s largest-capacity SSD. It will ensure elevated accuracy and high-geared performance.

The 15.36TB SSD is formed on a 12 GB/s serial attached SCSI (SAS) interface devised specifically for enterprise storage systems and features four times increased storage capacities than the existent memory drives in the market.

The conventional storage drives measure 3.5 inches. The smaller size of PM1633a, 2.5 inches form factor, allows twice the number of usual drives to be stacked in the standard 2U rack of 19 inches.

The gigantic 15.36TB of memory on one SSD has been made possible by an ingenious combination of V-NAND (vertical NAND) chips, each one rated at 256 Gigabits. The sixteen layered 256GB dies have been combined in one 512GB unit. 32 such V-NAND memory units combine together to form one 15.36TB storage drive.

A Big Improvement To Older Chips

The technology had been brought to life by the use of third generation V-NAND based 256GB chips. Constructed in 48 layer cell-arrays, V-NAND chips serve as the basic unit for the PM1633a. whose efficiency and stability in performance has been made possible due to this technology. Previously released PM1633 was constructed using the 32 layered cell-array based 128GB V-NANA chips.

PM1633a is rated at 1 DWPD, which is a measure of the number of drives written per day. The metric serves as a unit of reliability and reflects the better ownership cost for the enterprise storage systems. 1 DWPD refers to the fact that a massive 15.36TB of data can be written onto this memory drive each day. This results in improvement of the cost of ownership because PM1633a can write up to 10x more data as opposed to the typical SATA SSD.

PM1633a also features random read speed of 200,000 IOPS. The write speed of PM1633a can go up to 32,000 IOPS. On the other hand, the sequential read/write speeds of PM1633a can vary up to 1200 Mbps. Thus, PM1633a is 1000x more powerful in terms of the IOPS values than a conventional SATA SSD. PM1633a encompasses a 16GB DRAM. Samsung has also released a customized firmware to access NAND memory in large quantities simultaneously.

Privacy and data protection are the top-most concerns of the modern-day enterprises. Thus, the latest SSD drive by Samsung PM1633a comes with a state-of-the-art metadata protection tool. PM1633a also contains a restoration tool for data recovery.

The Senior Vice President of the Memory Product Planning and Application Engineering Team, Jung-bae Lee expressed the company’s stance in his statement released to the media:

To satisfy an increasing market need for ultra-high-capacity SAS SSDs from leading enterprise storage system manufacturers, we are directing our best efforts toward meeting our customers’ SSD requests. We will continue to lead the industry with next-generation SSDs, using our advanced 3D V-NAND memory technology, in order to accelerate the growth of the premium memory market while delivering greater performance and efficiency to our customers.”

The storage options in this range will include 48GB, 960GB, 1.92TB, 3.84TB and 7.68TB.

Hands On With The Leica SL Mirror-less Camera

Leica, a renowned German optics company joined the mirror-less ILC market with its T (Typ 701). The device however failed to rouse the user interest and was not much acknowledged because of its minimalist design and very few physical buttons. The company has recently disclosed its full frame mirror-less SL system comprising of the Typ 601 ILC and three well-matched lenses- Apo-VarioElmarit-SL 90-280mm F2.8-4, Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm F2.8-4 ASPH and Summilux-SL 50mm F1.4 ASPH.

Leica’s SL is the first autofocus full-frame mirror-less camera with finest EVF seen till date and its basic control system makes it a treat to use.

The new SL may seem to channel the design of the medium format S SLR and 35mm R SLR line-up but in fact it is an absolutely innovative design with a state of the art blueprint. The body comes in the classic black finish with aluminum and anodized cut. To make the grip strong yet comfortable, Leica SL Typ 601 ILC uses a textured material. The device is resistant to dust, moisture and splash. The use of gasket makes it convenient to shoot in harsh weather.

The SL weighs 1.9 pounds and features a 4.1×5.8×1.5 inches HWD, which can be made even larger with the use of vertical shooting grip.

Leica SL Typ 601 ILC encapsulates 2GB buffer memory allowing you to capture 24 MP pictures at the rate of 11 frames per second. For 4K and full HD videos, it is 24/30 and 120 frames per second respectively. In addition you can instantly save your shots in JPEG and RAW DNG formats to one or both of the available memory card slots. The perfect blend of high-speed performance, premium quality resolution and the brisk auto focus give you the unmatched professional photography experience. The camera does not support optical low-pass filter which means you can click exceptionally sharp images.

The Leica SL camera features the largest electronic finder with 100% view, 0.8x magnification and 4.4 million pixels for incredible clarity. The device also supports in-built +2/-4 diopter compensation.

The Leica SL Typ 601 ILC supports a huge battery of 7.2 V with 14 Wh capacities. The device packs the similar capacity as a typical DSLR but since it needs to power many displays it is graded at a reduced life of 400 shots. But practically it lasts longer than the graded rating. The relative charging time is around 190 minutes.

This brand new Leica SL will cost you $7450 for the body only. It is definitely pricey and costs more than twice the Sony A7s. The company however aims to meet the expectations with Leica SL Typ 601 ILC’s high-speed and high-end features and functions.

The Leica SL features all the usual cable connections including Micro USB 3.0 port Type B, Flash Sync Socket, Type A HDMI 1, 4 and Multi connector socket for audio adapter along with 3.5mm jacks.

The pervasive and feature-set Leica SL combines speed and optical conduct that ensure high-quality professional photography in the most challenging situations.
